Before we can even start the lessons we need to have a setup
that we can practice with.
So what's that mean??
Get the Dart Board in the right spot, clear of doorways,
hanging
things, windows etc. You'd be surprised where I have seen
dart boards hung.
The best standard measurements are
7 foot, 91/4 inches (237cm) from front of board to Oche
(the line on the floor you must throw from)
5 foot, 8 inches (173 cm) from floor to center of bull.
Oche can is usually a foot wide (30cm) and 1 inch tall (2.5
cm)
doesn't really matter, but it is usually raised off the floor so it is
impossible for you foot to slip over it.
Why such odd dimensions? Bugged if I know I couldn't be
bothered
finding out. As long as you board is set to those dimensions
you
should be OK for practice.
Lighting - make sure your lights are high, and pointing at the board,
and not shining back into the eyes of the thrower. Something
like
the halogen spot lights are great, they can be recessed into the
ceiling, and can be directional and have a great light output.
I also usually have the light just in front of the Oche,
why? If it is just behind the Oche, you risk
getting a shadow when you throw and it may put you off. Also
if you are using a halogen light you can easily get direction and spot
the light away from the thrower.
Make sure you practice with the board in the correct
position. If it is not in the correct position your wasting
your time. It will be too hard to compensate when you get
into a real match.
Make sure your darts are in good nick. Make sure
they are just SHARP enough (this is often forgotten). Make
sure the flights and shafts are OK and do not need replacing.
OK, so now you have everything setup, next we will be going
over the the basic grip stance etc to get you going.
However for now, have a bit of a muck around, throw a few
darts and get the feel of your new setup.
Catch you next email.
