Darts Flights

Hey, I dug this great gem out of the course about flights.  If you were not already aware flights are there to product DRAG not LIFT.  Why?  To keep your dart pointing in the right direction, and a stable as possible.

Flights,

Smaller flights tend to be less stable in the air but fast through the air.

Large Flights tend to be more stable but the higher the wind resistance of a large flight the slower they are through the air.

Tear drop flights tend to be a bit faster, and not quite as stable.

Ribbed flights are slower, because of the ribbing, which can add to dart stability.

Some of the newer flights have little ball marks on them, they tend to be faster,  a bit like a golf ball.

Also with flights you should consider a shaft ring on your dart shaft,  this allows the flight to pop off when hit by another dart.  If the flight pops off easily then the chance of the next dart deflecting in a large way is greatly reduced.
Also allows for tighter grouping.

So what sort of flight should you use.
Well depends on you and how comforatable you feel with the flight.  Have a play and try a few different ones out.  But remember the physically larger the flight, the harder grouping will be.

Rather than look at the physical size,  focus more on the drag.  That is what matters.

As a general rule.
If flights are there to produce drag.  It make sense that if you throw with a heavy dart then you should be using a larger (or higher drag flight).  As a low drag flight on a heavy dart will have little impact.

If you using a heavy dart, then try the ribbed flights.  They will offer good drag for a small size, allowing better grouping.

If you are using very light darts, then try small flights,  or the ball marked flights.  The ball marked flights are faster through the air so will have less drag.  That is more suitable for for light darts.

Also your throw speed will determine what sort of flight you should be looking at.

Contary to what a lot of people think,  a slower throw requires a larger (or more drag) flight.  And a faster throw usually requires a smaller flight.  It is due to stability and dart wobble.

Also if your so inclinded don't forget about the great array of custom flights.  Yep you can get custom flights with a huge array of custom prints on them.
